He is really smart and efficient.

・smart:聡明な、利口な、賢明な
・efficient:有能な、手際の良い
・speak highly of:(人や物のことを) 良く言う
・attentive:気が利く、思いやりのある
・in a subtle way:それとなく、あからさまではなく

上司の良い話

My boss is kind and reliable.
(私の上司は優しくて頼りがいがある。)

I wish I could work for such a competent boss.
(あんな有能な上司の下で働けたらなぁ。)

My boss is understanding and respects our autonomy.
(ボスは理解があって、私たちの自主性を尊重してくれる。)

He really knows how to motivate his people.
(彼は部下をやる気にさせるのが本当に上手。)

Our manager has a great sense of humor and lets small things slide.
(部長はユーモアのセンスがあって、細かいことは気にしない。)

He seemed like an ideal boss with a good balance of strictness and kindness.
(彼は厳しさを優しさを兼ね合わせた理想の上司。)

The accounting manager takes good care of his people.
(経理部長は部下の面倒見がいい。)

Our boss has a really sharp mind and is competent.

・reliable:信頼できる、頼りになる
・competent:有能な、適格な、法的権限のある
・autonomy:自立性、自主性、自治権、(行動や意思の) 自由
・motivate:意欲を起こさせる、駆り立てる
・let A slide:A を成り行きに任せる、構わない
・have a sharp mind:頭脳明晰である
・praise:【名詞】称賛(の言葉) /【他動詞】(通例公的に) 称賛する、褒める
・take the credit for:賞賛される、手柄とする

うわさ話

The PR manager is hitting on Emma.
(広報部長はエマを口説いている。→「異性に言い寄る」という意味)

Did you hear that he‘s seeing/dating Emily from the sales department?
(彼、営業部のエミリーと付き合ってるって聞いた?)

I saw them leaving together last week.
(先週、2人が一緒に帰るのを見たよ。)

They’re a perfect match, aren’t they?
(あの2人、お似合いのカップルだね。)

Why did Kylie and David break up? − I heard David cheated on her.
(カイリーとデイビッドはどうして別れたの? − デイビッドが浮気したんだって。)

I heard she’s getting married in June.
(彼女は6月に結婚するって聞いたよ。)

They won’t employ new graduates this year.
(今年は新卒採用しないんだって。→「正式に雇う」という意味)

Our company will be taken over by a rival company.
(うちの会社、ライバル会社に買収されるんだって。)

I heard that personnel changes will be announced next week.
(来週、人事異動が発表されるらしい。)

He’s going to transfer to our overseas office in New York.
(彼はニューヨーク支店に海外赴任するんだって。→「転勤する」という意味)

Rumor has it that Ms. Yoshida will be transferring to the product development department.
(吉田さんは商品開発部に異動するらしいよ。→「噂によると」という意味)

We were just talking about you.
(たった今、あなたの噂をしてたのよ。)

ネガティブな話

My boss is very demanding / intimidating.
(ボスはすごく要求が厳しい / 威圧的なんだ。)

He’s always buttering up his boss.
(彼はいつもボスにゴマをすっているの。)

He does only what he is told.
(彼は言われたことしかやらない。)

My immediate boss is tough to please.
(僕の直属の上司は気難しい。)

Daniel sneaks out of his duties really well.
(ダニエルは本当にサボるのが上手い。→「こっそり離れる」という意味)

He is always sucking up to the sales manager.
(彼はいつも営業部長に媚びている。)

My boss is asking for something beyond my ability.
(ボスは私に能力以上のことを要求してくる。)

My accounting manager is way behind the times.
(うちの経理部長は時代遅れだ。)

Ms. Goto likes to look for flaws in others.

I hate that guy. He drives me crazy.

・intimidating:威圧的な、脅迫的な
・butter up:やたら褒める
・suck up to:(英) ご機嫌を取る、ゴマをする
・flaw:❶(物の) 傷、ヒビ ❷(理論・計画・機能などの) 欠陥 ❸(性格の) 欠点、短所
・drive A to B:A を B の状態に追いやる
・have it in for:恨みを持っている、難癖をつける
・be way behind the times:時代遅れである
・flatter:お世辞を言う、喜ばせる、へつらう
・complain:文句・不平・苦情を言う
・big talker:ホラ吹き
・doer:行動力のある人

愚痴ばかりの人をたしなめる

You are always complaining.
(君はいつも愚痴ってばかりだな。)

Go easy on him/her. He/She’s just started.
(まだ始めたばかりなんだから大目に見てあげなよ。)

Managing your boss is part of your job.
(上司を操縦するも仕事のうちだよ。→「上手に付き合う・操る」という意味)

Don’t talk bad about someone behind their back.
(陰で人の悪口を言うのはやめなよ。)

You don’t know how to motivate your people.
(君は部下にやる気を起こさせる術が分かっていないんだよ。)

If you keep getting angry at him, he will lose his motivation.
(怒ってばかりいると、彼もやる気を失くすよ。)

I understand how you feel, but why don’t you soften it a bit?
(気持ちは分かるけど、もう少し柔らかく言ったらどう?)

You’re definitely not going to make yourself popular if you speak badly of others.
(人のことを下げたところで、自分が上がることは絶対に無いよ。)

・complain:文句・不平・苦情を言う
・go easy on:(口語) 大目に見る、容赦する
・manage:(人・動物を) うまく扱う、操る
・behind someone’s back:人のいないところで、隠れて
・motivate:意欲を起こさせる、駆り立てる
・soften:(態度・心・表情・声などを) 和らげる、優しくする
・definitely:(主張を強調して) 確かに、間違いなく
・speak badly of:(人や物のことを) 悪く言う
