Wikipedia

In The Kojiki, Amaterasu-Ōmikami, Tsukuyomi-no-mikoto and Susanoo-no-mikoto were born when Izanagi-no-Mikoto bathed in the river to purify himself after visiting Yomi, the Land of the Dead, in a failed attempt to rescue his deceased wife, Izanami-no-Mikoto.

According to the oldest existing record of Japanese history called the Kojiki, Izanagi and Izanami appeared on the Takama no Hara, or High Plain of Heaven, as brother and sister.

Standing on the Floating Bridge of Heaven, they stirred the ocean’s water with a jeweled spear, then took the spear out. The brine that dripped from the tip of the spear became the first Japanese island, Onogoro.

Izanagi and Izanami descended onto the island, got married, and made many more islands. First came Awaji Island.

After the birth of the islands, various other gods were born from the two creator-parents. But when the fire god Kagutsuchi was born, Izanami was burned to death by the heat. In a fit of grief, Izanagi went down to Yomi, in order to bring back his wife.

Arriving at the gate of a large palace, he called to Izanami and asked her to come back to the land of the living with him. She told to him that she would go ask the gods of Yomi, but she begged him not to look inside the palace.

She didn’t return for a long time, however, and when he peeked into a dark room with his torch against Izanami’s wishes, he found her body with maggots coming out of it.

Pursued by enraged Izanami and her monsters, Izanagi fled and moved a huge rock to close the passage to the underworld.

Izanagi then returned to the earth, where he cleansed himself in the ocean. From his purified eyes and nose appeared three great deities: Amaterasu (the sun goddess), Tsukuyomi (the moon god), and Susanoo (the storm god).

These three deities who were born from Izanagi’s purification, became Japan’s guardian gods and are still worshiped with great respect today.

Wikipedia)

Amaterasu is the supreme deity of the Shinto and the ancestor goddess of the imperial family.

Amaterasu Ōmikami is the Shinto sun goddess, and she is also said to be the chief divinity of Shintoism.

Amaterasu Ōmikami was born when Izanagi-no-Mikoto purified himself after escaping Yomi-no-kuni (the Underworld) by washing his left eye. She was told by Izanagi to rule over the land above the sky.

Ise-Jingu, where Amaterasu Omikami is enshrined, is considered the most prominent shrine in Japan and a quite sacred place.

Tsukuyomi

Tsukuyomi-no-mikoto is the god of the moon in Japanese mythology and brother to both Amaterasu and Susanoo.

Tsukuyomi was born when Izanagi-no-Mikoto washed his right eye.

There is little known about Tsukuyomi, but maybe Tsukuyomi would be male.

Susanoo

Wikipedia)

Susanoo-no-Mikoto is described in The Kojiki and The Nihon-Shoki as the son of Izanagi and the younger brother of Amaterasu-Ōmikami.

When Izanagi returned from the Land of Yomi, he purified himself in the ocean. As Izanagi washed his nose, he created the child, Susanoo.

Susanoo-no-Mikoto killed Yamata-no-orochi in order to escape Kushinada-hime (Princess Kushinada) and presented Kusanagi-no-tsurugi, a mythical Japanese sword within the serpent’s body, to Amaterasu-Ōmikami.

Yamata-no-orochi is a legendary eight-headed and eight-tailed Japanese serpent.

The sun goddess Amaterasu was told by Izanagi to rule the land of Heaven. She worked diligently at her job.

On the other hand, her brother, Susanoo, was told to rule the sea. But he disobeyed his father, crying and crying that he wanted to meet his late mother and his howling continued until his beard grew long, causing the mountains to wither and the rivers to dry up. The other gods thought Susanoo would destroy their world.

When Izanagi asked him why he kept crying so hard, Susanoo said that he wanted to go down to Yomi to visit her instead of ruling the oceans. Izanagi grew angry when he heard Susanoo mention the underworld and drove him away. Then he went to say goodbye to his sister Amaterasu before he proceeded to Yomi.

Amaterasu was suspicious, demanding a trial by pledge (Ukei) to prove his sincerity. Amaterasu birthed three goddesses from Susanoo’s sword, while he birthed five gods from her magatama (comma-shaped bead) hair ornament.

Amaterasu was completely convinced that she won since the five gods came from her hair ornament.

But Susanoo said, “Owing to my sincerity, I have begotten gentle and delicate goddesses. Judging from this, I have undoubtedly gained the victory!” Impetuous with victory, Susanoo remained in Takama no Hara, and he started playing wicked pranks.

Since coming to Takama no Hara, Susanoo played havoc with the place. He destroyed Amaterasu’s rice fields, threw a flayed pony into the hall where Amaterasu and other goddesses were weaving heavenly garments, and scattered excrement over the palace.

The other gods were worried that Susanoo would destroy their heaven. Most gracious Amaterasu tried to protect him from the other gods, but Susanoo continued to cause much trouble.

One day, Amaterasu became so angry and sad that she went into the heavenly rock cave, Ama no Iwato, and locked herself inside with a huge rock. With Amaterasu in hiding, the world had lost the light and plunged into darkness and chaos.

The other gods gathered together and discussed what to do. The god of wisdom, Omoikane, devised a scheme he was sure would get Amaterasu to come out. He said, “Everyone, we are going to have a festival.”

Then the gods collected roosters, whose crowing precedes the dawn, and decorated 500 trees with beautiful iron mirrors and an enormous magatama gem.

The gods started to sing while the strongest god, Ame no Tajikarao, waited at the blocked cave entrance. The roosters called out their song, and a cheerful goddess named Ama no Uzume then appeared and began to dance.

Her funny dance provoked uproarious laughter from all the other gods to the extent making Takama no Hara ring.

In the cave, Amaterasu heard their laughter. “The world is now completely dark. Why are they laughing?” She wondered what all the racket could be.

Amaterasu moved the rock that blocked the cave just a little and stuck her neck out to get a look. Suddenly, a single ray of sunshine came out into the darkness.

“Now!” Ame no Tajikarao grabbed her hand and pulled her outside. Another god then quickly sealed the cave with shimenawa, or a sacred rope, so she could not retreat again.

In this way, the world got back its sunlight.
