仏教は、御釈迦様を開祖とする世界三大宗教のひとつで、6世紀頃に日本に伝わり、平安時代から鎌倉時代にかけては浄土宗、真言宗、天台宗、日蓮宗などをはじめとした多くの宗派が生まれました。

日本人は無宗教といわれていますが、「親切」「利他」「諸法無我」「諸行無常」などの仏教精神は、日本人が自覚していなくとも脈々と受け継がれており、長い歴史の中で日本人の和のこころを築いてきました。

また、日本人は宗教に対してとても寛大な民族であり、神道や仏教を日常生活に取り入れつつ、教会で結婚式を挙げるカップルも多いだけでなく、クリスマスなどのキリスト教行事も、お祭り要素が強いとはいえ自然と受け入れています。

今回は、仏教と寺院について英語で説明する表現をご紹介していきます。

仏教の説明

「お釈迦様」と「仏陀」が同一と思われている方もいらっしゃるかも知れませんが、本来「仏陀」とは「悟りを開いた者」を意味し、個人を指すものではありません。

お釈迦様は、紀元前6世紀頃にネパール西南部の釈迦族の国の王子として生まれた人物で、仏教の開祖として知られています。

仏教は英語で、Buddhism といいます。

仏教の説明に使える単語

・聖者:saint(肩書きのときは Saint と大文字にします)
・高位の僧侶:Buddhist priest(祭祀等の諸行事を司る)
・お坊さん:Buddhist monk
・尼さん:nun
・仏教の経典:Buddhist doctrines/scriptures
・密教:esoteric Buddhism(esoteric とは「秘伝的な」という意味の固い表現です)
・宗教上の教え:doctrine
・宗派:sect, school, denomination など
・(お経などを)唱える:chant
・教えを説く:preach
・大本山、総本山:headquarter
・大仏:giant statue of Buddha
・救い、救済:salvation
・解脱:emancipation from worldly attachments

Buddhism is one of the three largest religions in the world.
(仏教は、世界三大宗教のひとつです。)

Buddhism was introduced to Japan around 500 BC from India through China.
(仏教は紀元前500年頃にインドで生まれ、中国を経由して日本に伝わりました。)

In Buddhism, Shaka is worshiped as Buddha.
(仏教では、釈迦を仏陀として崇拝します。)

The word Buddha refers to an enlightened Buddhist saint.
(仏陀とは、仏の悟りを開いた聖者のことです。)

In Japan, Buddhism is followed along with Shinto.
(日本では、神道とともに仏教が信仰されています。)

Buddhism is the teaching of Shaka that leads people to achieve enlightenment.
(仏教とは、お釈迦様が説いた、悟りを開くための教えです。)

Buddhism prohibits the taking of any life.
(仏教は殺生を禁じています。)

After Shaka’s death, Buddhism split into many different sects/denominations.
(釈迦の死後、仏教は多くの宗派に分かれました。)

The main denominations of Buddhism in Japan are Daijo-bukkyo (Mahāyāna Buddhism), emphasizing the salvation of others before one’s emancipation from worldly attachments.
(日本における仏教の主な宗派は「大乗仏教」で、自分の解脱よりも他者の救済を重視しています。)

Buddhism had a profound influence on the spiritual lives of the Japanese.
(仏教は、日本人の精神生活に大きな影響を与えました。)

Together with Shinto, Buddhism forms the spiritual culture of the Japanese people.
(神道とともに、仏教は日本人の精神文化を形成しています。)

The basic doctrines of Buddhism preach that worldly desires are the cause of any sufferings.
(仏教の基本的な教えでは、この世の苦しみは世俗的な欲望によるものだと説いています。)

五戒 / Five precepts

「五戒」とは、仏教において在家信者が守るべき生活規律のことで、「不殺生」「不偸盗」「不邪淫」「不妄語」「不飲酒」の5つの「戒」をいいます。

「戒律」という言葉がよく使われますが、これは自発的に守る「戒」と、罰則のある「律」が1つになったもので、本来は全く異なる概念のため、混用されやすい語でもあります。

In Buddhism, there are “the five precepts” that lay believers ought to abide by.
(仏教には、信者が守るべき「五戒」があります。)

The five precepts are standards the Buddhist followers must maintain.
(五戒とは、仏教徒が守るべき規範のことです。)

  1. 不殺生:Abstain from destruction of life
  2. 不偸盗:Abstain from stealing
  3. 不邪淫:Abstain from having sex with a woman other than one’s wife
  4. 不妄語:Abstain from lying
  5. 不飲酒:Abstain from intoxicants
POINT

・abide by A で、「(規則、決定などに)従う、(約束などを)守る」という意味です。
・should と ought to の違い:どちらも「〜するべき」の意味ですが、should は話者が「〜するべきだ」「〜したほうがいい」と主観的に述べたり、自分の気持ちをのせることができるため、圧倒的によく使われます。
ought to は、対象が法律、規則、義務だったり、話者が客観的に述べる場合などに使われ、やや固い書き言葉です。

寺院 / Tera

寺院とは、仏教の宗教活動の拠点となる施設で、礼拝の対象となる本尊が安置された本堂を備え、僧尼の生活の場である庫裏や鐘楼などがあり、法事や修行が行われます。

寺院を説明するときに使える単語

Tera (Buddhist temple) is a place where Buddhist images are enshrined, Buddhist monks live to practice ascetic exercises and Buddhist doctrines are preached.
(お寺は、本尊が祀られ、僧侶が住んで修行を行い、仏教の教義が説かれる場所です。)

Buddhist monks and nuns practice/study at the temple and some Buddhist services are held there.
(お寺ではお坊さんや尼さんが修行をしたり、法要が執り行われたりします。)

Many Japanese people visit a Buddhist temple in case of someone’s funeral or memorial service.
(多くの日本人は、誰かが亡くなったときや法要のさいに寺院を訪れます。)

During the bon festival and ohigan (equinoctial week), people come to the temple to make visits to their ancestral graves.
(お盆やお彼岸には、人々が先祖のお墓参りをするために寺院を訪れます。)

Many Buddhist temples have a gate at the main entrance.
(多くの寺院には、入り口に門があります。)

Temple grounds are called “keidai.”
(お寺の敷地は「境内」と呼ばれます。)

Most temples have a main hall called “hondo” that enshrines the Buddhist image that is the object of worship.
(殆どの寺院には、礼拝の対象となる本尊が祀られた、本堂と呼ばれる中心的な建物があります。)

Tera refers to a Buddhist temple in Japan, consisting of Hondō (main hall), Kōdō (lecture hall), and Shōrō (bell house).
(お寺とは日本の仏教寺院のことで、本堂、講堂、鐘楼などで構成されています。)

Within the precincts of the temple, there are things such as the daibonshō (large hanging bell), chozuya, a small water basin that is used to purify oneself before proceeding to the temple.
(お寺の境内には、大梵鐘や、参拝の前に身を清める手水舎などがあります。)

Some temples have three- or five-storied pagodas.
(いくつかの寺院には、三重塔五重塔があります。)

Towers such as five-storied or two-story pagodas are for housing what are said to be the remains of the Buddha.
(五重塔や多宝塔などの塔は、仏陀の遺物といわれるものが納められています。)

Some temples have large censers called daikōro in front of the hondo.
(本堂の前に、大香炉と呼ばれる大きな香炉がある寺院もあります。)

It is said that one is blessed by exposing oneself to the incense smoke from daikōro.
(大香炉で焚かれるお線香の煙を浴びることで、ご利益があるといわれています。)

僧侶、お坊さん / Buddhist monk

祭祀等の諸行事を司る僧侶は Buddhist priest ですが、ふつうに「お坊さん」の意味で伝えたい場合は Buddhist monk が適切です。尼さんは nun といいます。

Obōsan (Buddhist monks) live in the temple as they devote themselves to training, managing graves, and reciting sutras at Buddhist services.
(お坊さんは、修行に励むためにお寺に住み込み、お墓の管理をし、法事でお経を読んだりします。)

As a warning to themselves, they shave their heads.
(自分への戒めのために、頭を剃ります。)

There are religious commandments that a Buddhist monk must not do, called “five precepts.”
(お坊さんには、宗教的な戒めである、してはならない「五戒」というものがあります。)

These are Murder, Theft, Lust, Lying, and Intemperance.
(それらは 殺生、盗み、情欲、嘘をつく、飲酒です。)

手水舎の作法 / Manners of chozuya

1. Pick up the ladle in your right hand, scoop some water and wash your left hand.
(柄杓を右手に取り、お水をすくって左手を洗います。)

2. Swap the ladle to your left hand and pour water on your right hand.
(柄杓を左手に持ちかえて、右手にお水を注ぎます。)

3. Swap the ladle to your right hand again and pour water into your left palm.
(再び柄杓を右手に持ちかえて、手のひらにお水を注ぎます。)

4. Rinse your mouth with the water from your palm.
(そのお水で口をすすぎます。)

5. Wash your left hand with the remaining water in the ladle.
残ったお水で左手を洗います。)

6. Hold the ladle vertically to let water run down to clean it and put it back into place upside down.
(柄杓を縦にし、残ったお水で柄を清め、柄杓を伏せて元の場所に戻します。)

寺院の拝礼の作法

神社の参拝と異なり、拍手をしないことに注意しましょう。

1. Bow lightly in front of sanmon (temple gate)
(山門の前で軽くお辞儀をします。)

2. Enter the temple with the right foot and without stepping on the shikii (threshold).
(右足から入り、敷居は踏まないようにします。)

3. Purify yourself at chozuya with water before you proceed to the main temple.
(参拝の前に、手水舎で身を清めます。)

4. If there is a censer, light incense sticks and offer it.
(香炉がある場合は、お線香に火をつけて献香します。)

5. Toss some coins into the offertory box, put your hands together, and pray. Unlike the procedure at shrines, worshipers do not clap their hands.
(お賽銭を入れ、合掌して祈ります。神社と異なり、拍手を打ってはいけません。)

6. After praying, bow deeply once more. You should bow at an angle of around 90 degrees.
(お祈りを終えたら、もう一度深くお辞儀をします。お辞儀の角度は90度くらいです。)
