「確認する」の動詞

一般的に、確認に関する動詞には以下のものがあります。

check	点検して確かめる 人に聞いて確かめる
make sure	〜かどうか確かめる、点検する
confirm	証拠などによって裏付ける 約束・日時などを確認する
verify	証拠・証言などによって 真実である、正しいことを確認する
identify	身元を確認する 問題や物事の本質などを特定する

check

check は、調べたりや点検したりすることによって確認するときに使います。

名詞形も check になります。

Please check if everyone is in place.
（全員が揃っているか確認してください。）

I have checked for spelling mistakes.
（綴りに間違いがないか調べた。）

She checked whether all the windows were locked.
（彼女は窓が全て施錠されているか確かめた。）

make sure

make sure は、「〜かどうか確かめる」「点検する」のほか、「必ず〜するようにする」という意味があります。

She went upstairs to make sure her husband was asleep.
（彼女は夫が寝ているのを確かめるために2階へ上がった。）

Make sure that you close all the windows when you leave home.
（出かけるときは、必ず窓を全部閉めなさい。）

You had better make sure of a copy before they are sold out.
（売り切れる前にその本を1冊買っておいた方が良いよ。）

Make sure you look after this document because it contains classified/personal information.
（この書類には機密 / 個人情報が含まれているから、取り扱いには注意してください。）

confirm

confirm は、証拠や証言などを「本当である」と確かめる場合や、約束や日時などを確認するときに使われます。

名詞形は confirmation です。

The press confirmed the truth behind the rumors.
（マスコミは噂の真相を確かめた。）

The contents of the suitcase were confirmed to be human remains.
（スーツケースの中身は人骨であることが確認された。）

I confirmed my hotel reservations.
（ホテルの予約を確認した。）

verify

verify は、調査や証言、疑惑などが真実である、正しいことを証明する、立証するという意味で使われます。

名詞形は verification になります。

The police verified that the suspect didn’t shoot a gun.
（警察は容疑者が銃を撃っていないことを確認した。）

As time went on, everything he said was verified.
（時が経つにつれて、彼の言ったことがことごとく実証された。）

The verification system is a two-step process.

identify

identify は、人や物を「同一である」「身元が〜である」と確認したり、問題や物事の本質などを特定するときに使われます。

名詞の identity は「身元・正体」、identification は可算名詞で「身分証明書」、不可算名刺で「身元確認」「識別」の意味になります。

The police identified him as the murderer.
（警察は彼を殺人犯だと特定した。）

In the absence of DNA, fingerprints are used to identify unknown victims, witnesses or suspects and to verify records.
（DNA がない場合、指紋は未知の犠牲者や目撃者、または容疑者を特定し、記録を確認するために使われる。）
