furniture とは何か

furniture は「家具（全般）」や「調度品」などと訳され、日本語では家具を数えることができますが、厳密には furniture は「家具」ではなく、「家具諸々」という「集合名詞」を意味しています。

そのため、英語の furniture は数えることができません。

furniture という集合名詞の中に、a chair「椅子」や a sofa「ソファ」などが属している、というイメージです。

これは、dollar や coin は数えることができるものに対し、money という「お金の概念」は数えることができないのと同じ理屈になります。

家具の数え方

furniture は 不可算名詞 なので、piece や item などを使います。

I bought some new furniture.
（新しい家具を買った。）

This set of furniture uses high-quality wicker.
（この家具セットは、高品質の籐を使用しています。）

Three pieces of furniture are in the bedroom.
（寝室には家具が3つある。）

Several pieces of our furniture were soaked in this flood.

clothes / clothing

clothes は「衣服・衣類」を表し、clothing はややかたく「衣類全般」を指します。

cutlery / silverware

cutlery は、ナイフ・フォーク・スプーンなどの「食卓用金物」を表します。cutlery は主にイギリス英語で、アメリカ英語では silverware がよく使われます。

jewelry

jewelry は、貴金属類や宝石類、装身具を表す集合名詞です。

baggage / luggage

baggage と luggage は、いずれも「旅行用の手荷物・カバン」を表す不可算名詞です。

アメリカ英語では baggage がやや多く、luggage は イギリス英語で使われる傾向にありますが、さほど厳密ではありません。

We were asked to leave our baggage in the cloakroom at the museum.
（博物館では荷物をクロークに預けるように言われた。）

Please stow your luggage in the overhead compartments.
（お荷物は頭上の物入れに入れてください。）

machinery

machinery は、特に大型の機械類や機械装置を表す集合名詞で、数えるときは piece を使います。

Not training people in the operation of the machinery is irresponsible.
（その機械装置を操作する人たちを訓練しないのは無責任です。）

The dishonest salesman had tricked my father into buying a useless piece of machinery.
（不誠実なセールスマンが、父を騙して役に立たない機械を買わせた。）

stationery

stationery は、文房具や事務用品全般を指す集合名詞です。

※ スペルのよく似た stationary は、乗り物・人などが「静止した」という意味の形容詞ですので注意してください。

He bought some stationery at the school store.
（彼は学校の売店で文房具を買った。）

German stationery stores are good places to find some little souvenirs.
（ドイツの文房具店はちょっとしたお土産を買うのに良いでしょう。）
