体調・健康状態に関する英語表現に続き、今回はケガや痛みなどに関する英語の表現を、例文とともにご紹介していきます。

pain

It’s a sharp pain.
（鋭い痛みだ。）

The pain has almost gone away.
（痛みがだいぶおさまってきた。）

I have pain in my back, so I can’t bend over.
（腰が痛くて曲げられない。）

I felt an intense pain in my back last night.
（昨夜、背中に激しい痛みを感じた。）

Do you have any painkillers by chance?
（何か痛み止めを持っていたりしませんか？）

POINT

・intense：(熱・圧力・光などが) 強烈な、猛烈な、(感情・行動などが、抑えきれないほど) 激しい
・by chance：たまたま、偶然

hurt

hurt は、身体的・精神的に「痛む」という意味の自動詞、人や物を「傷つける」という意味の他動詞として使われます。

Does the cut hurt?
（傷は痛む？）

The loud noise hurt my ears.
（騒音で耳が痛い。）

My lower back hurts when I stand up.
（立つと腰が痛い。）

The second tooth from the back on the top right side hurts.
（上の右奥から2番目の歯が痛いです。）

What he said really hurt me.
（彼の言葉には本当に傷ついた。）

It won’t hurt you to weed the garden now and then.
（時々庭の草むしりをするくらいどうってことないだろう。→「だからやってくれ」というニュアンス）

POINT

・it won’t/wouldn’t/doesn’t A to do：A にとって大したことではない、問題ではない

ache

鋭い痛みのニュアンスを持つ hurt と異なり、ache は頭・背中・筋肉・胃などに継続的な鈍い痛みを感じるときなどに使います。

My back ached from standing so long.
（長時間立っていたので腰が痛かった。）

My head aches and I feel sleepy lately whenever I work.
（最近、頭が痛くなり、仕事をするたびに眠くなる。）

Headaches keep coming.
（頭痛がずっとぶり返している。）

I have a splitting headache.
（頭が割れるように痛い。）

sore

sore は形容詞で、体の一部が炎症を起こしてズキズキ、ヒリヒリするような痛みを感じるときに使います。

I’m still sore all over.
（体中がまだ痛い。）

My muscles are sore.
（筋肉痛です。）

I have a sore throat and a slight fever.
（喉が痛くて少し熱があります。）

injury

injury は、負傷、けが、損傷のほか、人の感情や名誉などを傷つけることなどにも使われます。

She is weakened by injury and illness.
（彼女はケガと病気で衰弱している。）

He suffered terrible pain from his injuries.
（彼はケガの激しい痛みで苦しんだ。）

The player was dropped from the team because of an injury.
（その選手はケガでチームから外れた。）

POINT

・suffer：【自動詞】(from) (病気などを) 患う、(問題などで) 苦しむ／【他動詞】(苦痛・発作などを) 経験する、受ける
・because of：〜が原因で、〜の理由で

acute pain	急性の痛み
chronic pain	慢性の痛み
dull pain	鈍い痛み
burning pain	焼けつくような痛み
tingling pain	チクチクする痛み、ヒリヒリする痛み
shooting pain	電撃痛
sharp pain	鋭い痛み、激痛
stinging pain	刺すような痛み
splitting pain	割れるような痛み
throbbing pain	ズキズキする痛み、脈拍性の痛み
cramping pain	筋肉が痙攣するような痛み、引き攣るような痛み
surgical pain、postoperative pain	術後の痛み

その他の表現

I have a stiff neck/back.
（肩/背中が凝っている。）

He pressed a handkerchief against the cut to stop the bleeding.
（彼は血をとめるために傷口をハンカチで押さえた。）

I sprained my ankle when I tripped on the stairs.
（階段でつまずいて足首を捻挫した。）

The cut on my right leg has become infected.
（右脚の傷口が化膿してきた。）

The cut was so deep that I could see the bone.
（傷口が深くて骨まで見えた。）

I burned my left hand with hot water.
（熱湯で左手を火傷した。）

The swelling in my arm won’t go away.
（腕の腫れがなかなか引かない。）

He was hit by a car and broke his left leg.

POINT

・stiff：❶(体の筋肉などが) 硬直した、凝った ❷(物が) 折り曲げにくい、ピンと張った ❸(生地などが) 固まった、固めの
・sprain：【名詞】捻挫／【他動詞】(足首・手首などを) くじく、捻挫する
・infected：(傷口などが) 化膿した、感染した
・so . . . that節：あまりに. . . で〜だ
・swelling：腫れ物、こぶ
