日本の風景を象徴する、美しく歴史深い街として知られる京都は、国内外問わず毎年多くの人々が観光に訪れ、世界で最も有名な古都のひとつとしてその名を不動のものにしています。

京都の基礎知識

It is about 450 kilometers west of Tokyo.

Kyoto is located in the southwest of Japan’s main island, Honshu.

The central part of Kyoto, widely known as “Rakuchu”, is often likened to the grid pattern “Goban no me (go board grid)” seen in Go game.

The charm of Kyoto is that, though a big city, it is full of temples, historic gardens, and old Japanese-style houses tucked away along streets behind the main avenues.

So many first-time visitors come back again because it is difficult to see the enchanting destinations in Kyoto in just a few days.

Over 300 shrines, as many as 1,700 temples, and many other cultural assets/properties from the long history of the city impress visitors. Some of them are world-famous and have the UNESCO World Heritage designation.

Kyoto has strict building regulations to protect its townscape. For example, there are restrictions on the materials of roofs and walls, roof pitch, and the color and size of outdoor advertisements.
(街の景観を守るために、京都には厳しい条例があります。例えば屋根や壁の素材、屋根の勾配、屋外広告の色やサイズなどが規制されています。)

京町家・京町屋

The traditional Japanese wooden townhouses are called “machiya” and are often nicknamed “unagi-no-nedoko (bed for an eel).”
(日本の伝統的な木造の家は「町家・町屋」といい、「うなぎの寝床」と呼ばれることもあります。)

It features a narrow front and a deep interior, narrow and long like an eel.
(正面が狭く、内部が奥へ深く、うなぎのように細長いのが特徴です。)

This is because houses were taxed according to the width of their street frontage during the Edo period.
(これは、江戸時代は通りに面した家の幅に応じて課税されていたからです。)

The windows facing streets have narrow latticework through which the outside can be seen from within, but not the other way around.
(通りに面した窓は細い格子状になっているため中から外が見えますが、外からは中が見えません。)

洛中 / Central Kyoto

As the heart of the old capital city, Raku-chū is still the most densely populated area in Kyoto and there are lots of shops and hideaway cafes.
(かつての首都の中心であった洛中は、今日でも京都で最も人口密度の高いエリアであり、お店や隠れ家的なカフェがたくさんあります。)

Karasuma Dōri (street), Kawaramachi Dōri and Shijo Dōri stretching north from Kyoto Station, are some of the city’s most popular shopping districts.
(京都駅から北へ延びる烏丸通り、河原町通り、四条通りは、市内で最も人気のあるショッピング街のひとつです。)

The term “Raku-chū” has long been used to refer to inner Kyoto, and the area outside Raku-chū is called “Raku-gai.”
(洛中という言葉は昔から京都の中心部を指して使われており、その外側は洛外と呼ばれます。)

But when asked where the boundary lies between Raku-chū and Raku-gai, few people, including those in Kyoto, can correctly answer the question.
(しかし、洛中と洛外の境目はどこにあるのかと聞かれたら、京都人を含め、正解できる人はあまりいません。)

洛北エリア / North of Kyoto

Raku-hoku is a tranquil rural area of northern Kyoto and contains many famous historical temples, shrines and abundant greenery.
(洛北は京都北部の静かな田園地帯で、歴史のある有名な寺院、神社、そして豊かな緑があります。)

Raku-hoku area has two old and famous shrines, Shimogamo and Kamigamo shrines.
(洛北エリアには、下鴨神社と上賀茂神社の、古くて有名な2つの神社があります。)

Ohara in the Raku-hoku area has lots of greenery and clear streams, is Kyoto’s best-kept secret, and can be reached in about an hour from Kyoto Station by bus.
(洛北エリアの大原は、豊かな緑と清らかな小川があり、京都駅からバスで一時間ほどでたどり着ける穴場です。)

Raku-hoku is popular among visitors and city dwellers alike who wish to go to a place rich in nature.
(洛北は、自然の豊かな場所に行きたいという観光客や都会に住む人たちに人気があります。)

洛南エリア / South of Kyoto

Raku-nan, the south district of Kyoto, is where you can find some of the most impressive sites in Kyoto. The three main temples include Fushimi Inari Taisha, Tofuku-ji, and Daigo-ji.
(京都の洛南地区は、京都で最も印象的な場所がいくつかあります。)

Fushimi Inari Taisha, known for its thousands of scarlet Torii gates and located in the Fushimi ward, worships Inari, the god of rice.
(伏見区にある、何千もの緋色の鳥居で知られる伏見稲荷大社は、穀物神である稲荷を祀っています。)

Tofuku-ji, which is the second most famous temple in the south after Fushimi Inari Taisha, is famous for the beautiful autumn color of the leaves in the garden.
(洛南で伏見稲荷大社に次いで2番目に有名な東福寺は、庭園の紅葉が美しいことで有名です。)

洛西エリア / West of Kyoto

The term “Raku-sei” means western Kyoto, namely the Arashiyama and Sagano areas.
(「洛西」という言葉は、京都の西、つまり嵐山や嵯峨野を指します。)

Raku-sei, the western part of Kyoto, has a somewhat different atmosphere from that of the shopping districts around Kyoto Station and other areas.
(京都の西部、洛西は、京都駅周辺の商店街やその他のエリアとは雰囲気が少し違います。)

Arashi-yama and Sagano are some of the top tourist spots in Kyoto, especially with visitors who prefer the calm and quiet atmosphere of Kyoto to busy shopping districts.
(嵐山や嵯峨野は、特に賑やかな商店街よりも静かな京都の雰囲気を好む観光客に人気のスポットです。)

Togetsu-kyo, the Moon Crossing Bridge, is the landmark of Arashiyama and is very crowded during the autumn leaf season.

There are several World Heritage-listed temples in this area, including Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion), formally Rokuon-ji, Saihō-ji, with its moss garden, Ryoan-ji with its world-famous rock garden, and Tenryu-ji, the first of the Five Great Zen Temples in Kyoto.
(このエリアには、金閣寺、苔庭の西芳寺、枯山水が世界的に有名な龍安寺、京都の五山の一位の寺院である天龍寺など、世界遺産に登録されている寺院がいくつかあります。)

洛東エリア / East of Kyoto

“Raku-tō,” the eastern part of Kyoto, there are many temples and shrines, including Ginkaku-ji temple to the north of Kiyomizu-dera temple, which is one of the most popular sightseeing spots in Kyoto.
(京都の東部、「洛東」には、京都で最も人気のある観光スポットのひとつである清水寺やその北にある銀閣寺など、多くの寺院や神社があります。)

If you have a plan to visit Kyoto, walk the paths of the elegant Raku-tō area at the foot of Higashiyama, the Eastern Mountain, that run from Ginkaku-ji, the Silver Pavilion, in the north to Kiyomizu-dera and Sanjusangen-dō, the hall of a thousand Kannon, in the south.
