near と close の違い
near と close はいずれも「近い」という意味ですが、near は「物理的・時間的に近い」、close は「物理的・人間関係が近い」ときに使います。
また、close は 動詞の「閉じる」からも分かるように、near よりも接近していて「密接な」ニュアンスです。

The hut is close to the lake.
（その小屋は湖からとても近い。）
It was close to midnight when I got home.
（私が家に帰ってきたときは真夜中近かった。）
He is very close to his father.
（彼はお父さんとうまくいっている。→ 間柄が近い）
farther と further の違い
farther と further はいずれも「もっと遠くに」「さらに進んで」の意味ですが、一般的に farther は物理的に、further は事柄の程度などについて使います。
ただし、イギリス英語では物理的な意味でも further が用いられます。

The station is close by, so there’s no time difference on the express or local.

My apartment and the station are close. It only takes one minute to get from one to the other.

関係や間柄の距離
Paul and I are distant relatives.
