Omamori

POINT

Omamori, or lucky charms, is said to summon good fortune and expel evil.

Omamori is usually obtained/found at Shinto shrines or Buddhist temples.

Divinities’ names, prayers or shrine names, and temple names are written on pieces of wood or paper.

Answers to prayers include a variety of things, such as road safety, passing examinations, business success, good health, and safe childbirth.

Each jinja has various omamori for benefits such as traffic safety, passing a school’s entrance exam, business prosperity, good health, and easy childbirth.

Omamori is a smaller type of amulet that people can carry with them in a bag or purse.

It is believed that by always keeping omamori on oneself or by hanging it inside one’s car, one can receive the divine protection of the gods and Buddha.

Ema

Ema is a wooden board on which a picture of a horse is printed, and people write their wishes on it.

It is offered/dedicated to a Shinto shrine or a Buddhist temple.

Ema are pictures of horses drawn on wood, the upper part of which has a roof, and offered to shrines or temples when making wishes or after one’s prayers are answered.

The reason why ema has a house-like shape is because of traces of how it imitated the roof of a horse stable.

In ancient times, living horses were dedicated/offered to a Shinto shrine.

Ema is a wooden tablet bearing a picture of a horse, which we offer to a shrine or temple when we pray for something or after our prayers are answered.

Hamaya

破魔矢は sacred arrows(神聖な矢)、decorative arrows(飾り用の矢)、 demon-breaking arrow(悪霊を壊す矢) などと訳されます。

sacred arrows given by shrines to visitors on New Year’s Day

It is said that hamaya attracts good luck and wards off evil/bad luck for the incoming year.

Hamaya is found/available in a Shinto shrine or a Buddhist temple.

POINT
