英語で説明する【おせち料理とお雑煮】

日本のお正月を象徴する「おせち料理」。

「おせち」は、もともとは「年神・歳神」様に捧げる供物としての料理「御節供(おせちく、おせつく)」や「節会(せちえ)」の略として呼ばれたものだそうです。

また、昔はお正月の期間はお店がお休みなのが普通で、お母さんがお正月の間にお食事の支度をしなくて済むように、比較的保存が効くつくり方で構成されたものがもとになっているといわれています。

そしておせち料理の素材はそれぞれに意味があり、長寿や子孫繁栄などの縁起を担いだものがほとんどです。

海外の方におせち料理を説明するときは、ひとつひとつの素材が何を表しているか、何に由来するかなどを添えると、よりおせち料理の奥深さが伝わるでしょう。

おせち料理の説明

おせち料理は、簡単に言うと「日本のお正月料理」ですが、

“Osechi” are traditional Japanese cuisine that are eaten on New Year’s Day.
(「おせち」とは、お正月に食べられる日本の伝統的なお料理です。)

It typically comes in tiered lacquer boxes called “jubako” that contain dozens of kinds of traditional foods.
(たいていは、漆塗りの重箱の中に様々な伝統料理が詰められています。)

Each of the ingredients in osechi-ryori has meanings, such as happiness, good health, a rich harvest, descendants prosperity, longevity, and so on.

お正月料理に関する用語

・餅つき:pounding steamed rice to make rice cake

素材の由来と意味

Each dish is symbolic, such as Kazunoko (herring eggs), which symbolize a wish to be gifted with numerous children, or shrimp, which symbolize a wish for longevity.
(それぞれのお料理には意味があり、たくさんの子供を授かりたいという願いを象徴する数の子や、長生きへの願いを象徴する海老などがあります。)

数の子 / Kazunoko

数の子は、ニシンの卵巣を塩漬けにしたもので、卵が多いことから「子孫繁栄」の象徴とされています。

“Kazunoko” is herring roe.(「数の子」はニシンの卵です。)

“Kazu” means number, and “Ko” means children.
(Kazu は数、Ko は子供を意味しています。)

Kazunoko is a lot of roe, so it symbolizes “descendants prosperity.”
(数の子は卵が多いので、「子孫繁栄」を象徴しています。)

Kazunoko symbolizes the wish to be blessed with children because herrings lay lots of eggs. 
(ニシンは卵をたくさん産むので、数の子は子宝に恵まれたいという願いを象徴しています。)

黒豆

“Kuromame” is sweet simmered black soybeans.
(Kuromame は甘く煮た黒豆です。)

Eating Kuromame means that you can stay strong and healthy.
(黒豆を食べることは、強く健康でいられることを意味しています。)

伊達巻き / Datemaki

“Datemaki” is a sweet rolled omelet mixed with fish paste.
(伊達巻きはお魚のすり身を使った甘いオムレツです。)

Datemaki looks similar to makimono (scrolls) and represents a wish for improving academic skills.
(伊達巻きは巻物に似ており、学業成就への願いを表しています。)

Since scrolls were historically used to record knowledge, the hope is that by eating Datemaki, you can gain a lot of knowledge about something.
(巻物は歴史的に知識の記録に使われていたので、伊達巻を食べることによって、多くのことを学ぶことができるという願いが込められています。)

The shape of Datemaki looks like rolled-up scrolls, and it is regarded as a lucky food for making progress in learning and enriching their knowledge.

海老 / Ebi

Ebi (shrimp) symbolizes a wish for longevity.
(海老は長寿への願いを象徴しています。)

Shrimp symbolizes a long life because its back is bent like an old person’s, and they have a long mustache.
(海老は背中が老人のように曲がっていて長いヒゲが生えているため、長寿を象徴しています。)

田作り / Tazukuri

“Tazukuri” is candied sardines.(田作りは、イワシの砂糖煮です。)

“Tazukuri” has the meaning of “rich harvest.”

Tazukuri literally means “to make rice paddy,” as sardines were historically used to fertilize rice fields.
(田作りは文字通り「水田作り」を意味し、その昔イワシが水田の高級肥料として使われていたことに由来します。)

「水田」は paddy field や rice paddy といいます。

れんこん / Renkon

Renkon (lotus root) is regarded as a lucky vegetable because it has lots of holes, which symbolizes the ease of looking through to the future.
(れんこんは、たくさん穴が空いているため、未来を見通しやすい幸運の野菜とされています。)

紅白かまぼこ / Kouhaku-kamaboko

“Kamaboko” is a boiled fish cake.(かまぼこはお魚のすり身です。)

“Kou” means red, and “Haku” means white.
(Kou は 赤、Haku は白を意味しています。)

The shape of the half-circle “Kamaboko” is said to resemble the first sunrise of the New Year from the horizon.
(半円のかまぼこのかたちは、水平線からの初日の出に似ているといわれています。)

In Japan, the combination of red and white is the color of celebration and symbolizes happiness.
(日本では、赤と白の組み合わせはお祝いの色であり、幸福の象徴です。)

昆布巻き

“Kobumaki” is herring or other fish wrapped with kombu (kelp).
(昆布巻きは、ニシンなどのお魚を昆布で巻いたものです。)

Kelp symbolizes joy because a Japanese word for kelp is kombu, which sounds like “yorokobu,” meaning “be joyful.”
(昆布は、日本語の「こんぶ」が「よろこぶ」の音と似ているため、幸運を意味するとされています。)

お煮しめ / Onishime

“Onishime” is root vegetables simmered in soy sauce.
(お煮しめは根菜をお醤油で煮たものです。)

Root vegetables root in the soil, so it has the meaning of “long-lasting happiness.”
(根菜は土の中に根を張るので、末長い幸せという意味があります。)

生酢 / Namasu

Namasu is made of daikon radish and carrot cut into thin strips and pickled in sweetened vinegar with yuzu (a small citrus fruit) flavor.
(生酢は、大根と人参を千切りにし、甘いお酢に漬けて柚子の風味を添えています。)

It is prepared in such a way that it resembles a mizuhiki which is used as a decoration for many special occasions in Japan.
(これは、日本で特別な行事に使われる「水引」に似せてつくられています。)

Mizuhiki is an ancient Japanese decorative art form made of red and white cords.
(水引とは、日本に古くからある赤と白の飾りひものことです。)

In Japan, it is said that the combination of red and white is a representation of the auspicious.

栗きんとん

“Kurikinton” is a sweet-simmered chestnut with sweet potatoes.
(栗きんとんは、栗とさつまいもの甘煮です。)

It has a gold color, so it has the meaning of “bringing good luck and prosperity.”
(金色をしているので、幸運と成功をもたらすとされています。)

Kurikinton symbolizes economic fortune and wealth.
(栗きんとんは、金運と財産を象徴しています。)

鯛 / Tai

Japanese people eat sea bream on festive occasions.
(日本人は、おめでたいときに鯛を食べます。)

“Sea bream” is “tai” in Japanese, and we associate it with another Japanese word, “medetai,” which means “auspicious.”
(Sea bream は日本語で「鯛」と言い、我々はこれを縁起が良いことを意味する「めでたい」と結びつけています。)

お餅 / Mochi

お正月といえばやはりお餅。普段あまり食べないけれど、お正月にはついついたくさん食べてしまう、という方も多いのではないでしょうか。

お餅は英語で、rice cake と訳されます。

Mochi is made by pounding steamed glutinous rice.
(お餅は、蒸した餅米をつき叩くことによってつくります。)

Mochi is a traditional food for the Japanese New Year and is grilled or put into soup with vegetables and eaten.

お雑煮 / Ozoni

お正月の食べ物といえば「お雑煮」。
おせち料理は大人な味付けのものが多いためか、あまり子供には人気がありませんが(笑)、お雑煮が嫌いな人はなかなかいないのではないでしょうか。

お雑煮は、「お正月に食べる、お餅やお野菜が入った日本の伝統的なスープ」のように表現すると分かりやすいかと思います。

簡単な言い方としては、以下のような表現があります。
