英語で自己紹介②／趣味・好きなことに続き、今回は自分の家族やペットを説明する英語表現を、例文とともに学習していきましょう。質問する側の文章も参考になさってください。

家族構成

There are four (people) in my family.
We are a family of four.
（4人家族です。）

It’s my parents and my little brother.
（両親と弟がいます。）

Do you have any brothers or sisters?
（ごきょうだいはいらっしゃいますか。）

I’m the oldest daughter/son.
（長女 / 長男です。）

I’m the second of three brothers.
（3人兄弟の2番目です。）

I’m an only child.
（一人っ子です。）

I’m the youngest child.
（末っ子です。）

I have a brother and two sisters.
（男一人、女2人のきょうだいがいます。）

I have one older brother and one older sister.
（兄と姉が一人ずついます。）

I have a four-year-old daughter.
（4歳の娘がいます。）

I have one of each.
I have one son and one daughter.
（息子と娘が一人ずついます。）

I have one daughter in grade/elementary school.
（小学生の娘が一人います。）

家族はこんな人です

My 5-year-old son is at his most mischievous age.
（私の5歳の息子は腕白盛りです。）

My older brother is fond of Japanese martial arts. He is a second dan at Kendo.
（私の兄は日本の武道が好きで、剣道二段です。）

My mother enjoys gardening and grows many kinds of flowers in the garden.
（母はガーデニングが趣味で、お庭で色々な種類のお花を育てています。）

My mother is very stubborn and opinionated.
（私の母は頑固で自分の意見を曲げません。）

My parents are from Kanagawa, but they moved to Tokyo after getting married.
（両親はもともと神奈川の出身ですが、結婚してから東京に住んでいます。）

My parents are overprotective. Every time I come home late at night, they grill me.
（私の両親は過保護です。夜遅く帰ってくると、厳しく尋問されます。）

My wife makes more money than I do.
My wife is the main breadwinner.
（妻のほうが私より稼ぎがいいです。→「働き手」という意味）

POINT

・overprotective：過保護の、庇いすぎている
・breadwinner：一番の働き手、大黒柱

ペットのこと

I have a dog/cat/parrot.
（犬 / 猫 / オウムを飼っています。）

I have a male Jack Russell Terrier.
（ジャックラッセルテリアの雄を飼っています。）

Its name is Poochy.
（名前はポチです。）

It’ll be turning four this year.
（今年4歳になります。→「ある状態になる」という意味）

I adopted him/her from my friend.
（友達からもらいました。→「引き取る」という意味）

He/She was a stray cat when I found him/her last year.
（去年捨てられていた猫を見つけたんです。→「野良猫」という意味）

I felt pity for him/her and decided to keep him/her.
（可哀想になり、飼うことにしたんです。）

It’s very active, and I take it out for a walk twice a day.
（とても活発で、1日に2回お散歩に連れて行きます。）

POINT

・adopt：❶(方針・計画・教科書などを) 採用する ❷(習慣などを) 取り入れる ❸養子にする、動物を引き取る
・stray：道に迷った、はぐれた、飼い主のいない
・pity：【名詞】同情、憐れみ、残念なこと／【自動詞】可哀想に思う／【他動詞】〜を可哀想に思う
・decide to do：〜することに決める、〜しようと決意する
