英語で自己紹介③／家族のことに続き、今回は自分の職業を説明する英語表現を、例文とともに学習していきましょう。質問する側の文章も参考になさってください。

相手の仕事について尋ねる

What’s your job? はやや堅い印象を与えるため、日常会話ではあまり使われません。

What do you do?
（お仕事は何をされていますか。→ 最も一般的な表現）

（どのような関係のお仕事をされているのですか。）

What time do you finish work?
（お仕事はだいたい何時に終わるのですか。）

自分の職業を伝える

I work part-time as a store clerk at a department store.
（アルバイトでデパートの店員をしています。）

I’m self-employed.
I have my own business.
（自営業です。）

I run a doughnut/flower shop.
（ドーナツ屋 / 花屋を経営しています。）

I’m a freelance interpreter/writer.
（フリーの通訳 / ライターです。）

I’m working as a temporary worker at a real estate agency.
（不動産会社で派遣社員として働いています。）

POINT

・in charge of：～を担当・管理して、～を任されて
・head：(組織・活動などを) 率いる、指導する
・clerical work：事務の仕事、事務職
・foreign-affiliated：外資系の

I arrange meetings and maintain calendars.
（ミーティングを設定したり、スケジュールの管理をしています。）

I manage the PR department. I‘m responsible for web marketing.
（広報部の部長です。ウェブマーケティングを担当しています。）

I’m responsible for the financial control of an English company.
（イギリスの会社で財務管理をしています。）

I‘m working on a system development.
（システム開発に取り組んでいます。）

I have 10 years of experience in the advertising industry.
（広告業界で10年の経験があります。）

I keep confidential files and customer information.
（機密ファイルや顧客情報の管理をしています。）

（脱サラして自営業をしています。）

POINT

・be responsible for：❶〜に対して責任がある ❷〜の原因である
・confidential：(情報が) 内密の、機密の
・corporate dropout：脱サラした人

仕事の感想

I really enjoy my work.
（仕事をとても楽しんでいます。）

I’m happy to have a job I like.
（好きな仕事に就けて幸せです。）

It’s a very enjoyable and satisfying job.
（楽しくて満足感を得られる仕事です。）

Our office has a really nice atmosphere.
（職場の雰囲気がすごくいいです。）

It’s a rewarding job.
（やりがいのある仕事です。）

It’s a very demanding job, but I like it.
（大変な仕事ですが、気に入っています。）

The pay is not so high, but they offer raises, and the management team is very respectable and reliable.
（お給料はそれほど高くありませんが、昇給もありますし、経営陣は非常に立派で信頼できる人たちです。）

POINT

・sedentary：(かたく) 座りっぱなしの、座りがちで身体を動かさない
・I have stiff shoulders.：肩が凝っている
・I get stiff shoulders.：肩が凝る
・quota：割り当て、分担、ノルマ
・achieve：(目標・課題などを) 成し遂げる、(地位・成功などを) 獲得する、得る
・be/feel embarrassed：恥ずかしい、ばつが悪い
・be between jobs：休職中である
・make a cold call：売り込み・勧誘の電話をかける
・be on A’s payroll / be on the payroll of A：A に雇われている

転職を考えている

I’m thinking about changing jobs.
（転職しようか考え中です。）

I’m between jobs.
（新しい仕事を探しています。→「間の状態」で、つまり「求職中」という意味）

I’d like to utilize my English-speaking ability at work.
（英語を使う仕事に就きたいと思っています。）

I’m thinking about going into publishing in the future.
（将来は出版関係に進みたいと思っています。）

POINT

・utilize：(かたく) 利用する、活用する
・ability：(身体・精神的な) 能力、〜できること、技量

役職名・肩書き

会社によって異なる場合もありますが、だいたい以下のような呼び方が一般的です。

代表取締役社長	President、 CEO または head of the company など
最高経営責任者	CEO ／ chief executive officer → アメリカ合衆国の法人において業務執行を統括する役員 ※ イギリスでは MD ／ Managing Director
最高業務執行責任者	COO ／ Chief Operating Officer
取締役会長	chairman
副社長	vice-president
専務・常務	managing director または executive director
部長	manager
営業本部長	general manager of sales section
課長	section manager、section head、section chief、または head of section など

職業の名前

会社員	company employee
(事務系の) 会社員	office worker
正社員	full-time worker
契約社員	contract employee
派遣社員	temporary worker
秘書	secretary
公務員	public employee
会計士	accountant
税理士	tax accountant
保育士	preschool teacher
介護士	care worker
