今回は、英語での時間や時刻をスラスラ言えるように、日常会話でよく使われる表現を例文とともにご紹介していきます。

時刻

皆さんもご存知の o’clock は、24時間表記では使用しませんので注意しましょう。

最近では、アメリカ英語でもイギリス英語でも、nine thirteen(9時13分)のように頭から数字を読むのが主流となっています。

1 o’clock
(1時)

four twenty-five
(4時25分)

ten thirty
(10時30分)

eleven thirty-four
(11時34分)

eight eleven
(8時11分)

Then, five thirty at the corner.
(では、5時半にそこの角で。)

きっかり、ちょうど

She came at five sharp.
(彼女は5時きっかりに来た。)

We shall leave on the dot at eleven.
(11時きっかりに出発しよう。)

Her husband came home precisely/exactly at six every day for dinner.
(彼女の夫は、夕食のために毎日6時ちょうどに帰宅した。)

He was never very punctual.
(彼は時間に正確ではなかった。)

〜分前

最近では、アメリカ英語でもイギリス英語でも、nine forty-five(9時45分)のように頭から数字を読むのが主流となっています。

アメリカ式10時15分前: nine forty-five
または quarter of/before ten
イギリス式to
10時15分前: quarter to ten

Please cancel my quarter of one appointment.
Please cancel my twelve forty-five appointment.
(私の12時45分の予約をキャンセルしてください。)

He finished his address at just after ten of four.
(彼は、3時50分を少し過ぎたところで演説を終えた。)

What time does the bus leave? − At ten of four.
(バスは何時に出ますか。– 4時10分前です。)

Is it twenty-five before seven already?
(もう7時25分前ですか。)

It’s still only five before seven.
(まだ7時5分前じゃないか。)

The time now is exactly two minutes before nine.
(今の時刻はちょうど9時2分前です。)

It’s quarter to two.
(2時15分前です。)

You should start to get ready at about twenty to ten.
(10時20分前頃までには準備をしておいてください。)

〜分後

最近では、アメリカ英語でもイギリス英語でも、ten fifteen(10時15分)のように頭から数字を読むのが主流となっています。

アメリカ式10時15分: ten fifteen
または quarter after ten
イギリス式past
10時15分: quarter past ten

Is it quarter past eight yet?
(もう8時15分ですか。)

Please be seated by twenty after eight.
(8時20分には着席してください。)

Your speech is scheduled for twenty minutes after two.
(あなたのスピーチは2時20分に予定されています。)

Right now, it is half past ten.
(今、10時半です。)

It’s eighteen minutes past one! I must hurry.
(もう1時18分だわ。急がなくちゃ。)

The fair was open from half past nine in the morning until a quarter after 5.
(見本市は朝の9時半から5時15分まで開いていました。)

Did you say quarter to five or quarter past five?
(5時15分前とおっしゃいましたか、それとも5時15分過ぎですか。)

POINT

・Please be seated.:(大勢の人に対して) 座ってください
・be scheduled:予定される

時刻の前後

The meeting finished thirty minutes ago.
(会議は15分前に終わった。)

Please get here 5 minutes early.
(5分前にはこちらにお越しください。)

Please arrive at least five minutes before the scheduled start time.
(少なくとも、開始予定時刻の5分前にはお越しください。)

If you arrive 10 minutes early, you won’t have to line up.
(10分前に来れば、並ぶ必要はないよ。)

I submitted my report with five minutes to spare.
(レポートの締め切り5分前に提出した。)

Don’t make any noise after midnight.
(夜中の12時を過ぎたら、物音を出さないでください。)

After a few minutes, the nice building vanished, and it was a mountain of rubble.
(数分後、美しいビルは姿を消し、瓦礫の山になった。)

POINT

・vanish:(今まで存在していたものが、突然・不可解にも) 消える、姿を消す
・rubble:(石・れんがなどの) 破片、瓦礫

時刻の間

I will be home between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. tomorrow.
(明日は午後3時から5時の間は自宅にいます。)

There were many calls between twelve and twenty-five before one.
(12時から12時35分の間に、電話がたくさんあった。)

The buses run every 10 minutes from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m., seven days a week.
(バスは毎日7時から17時まで、10分おきに運行している。)

午前

morning は夜明けから正午まで、または夜中の12時から正午までの間を指します。

It rained throughout the morning.
(午前中ずっと雨が降っていた。)

She took the 8:32 train for Chicago.
(彼女は午前8時32分のシカゴ行きに乗った。→ 電車の時刻表は通例24時間制)

The meeting has been postponed until tomorrow at 9 a.m.
(会議は明日の午前9時に延期された。)

I lost a lot of time this morning as I got caught in a traffic jam.
(今朝は渋滞に巻き込まれて、かなり時間が無駄になったよ。)

POINT

・throughout:❶(時間) 〜の間じゅう、〜中ずっと ❷(場所) あちこちに
・postpone:(計画・催しなどを) 延期する

お昼・正午

It may rain around noon.
(お昼頃には雨が降るかもしれない。)

I have an appointment at noon.
(正午に約束がある。)

This article was suppressed until noon today.
(この記事は今日の正午まで差し止めになっていた。)

The attack happened in broad daylight on a main street.
(襲撃は真昼間の大通りで起こった。)

POINT

・suppress:❶(反乱・暴動などを) 鎮圧する ❷(情報などを) 規制する、公表しない ❸(感情などを) 抑える
・in broad daylight:昼時、正午

午後

He spent yesterday afternoon scouring the rust out of the fence.
(昨日の午後は柵の錆を洗い落とすことに費やした。)

On a holiday afternoon, I like reading a book or listening to music while lying in bed.
(休日の午後、ベッドに寝転がって本を読んだり音楽を聴いたりするのが好きです。)

POINT

・scour:❶(たわしなどで、鍋・床などを) 磨く、こすって洗う ❷(さび・汚れなどを) こすって取る、洗い落とす
・rust:【自動詞】(金属などが) 錆びる、(思考力が) 鈍る /【名詞】錆、錆状のもの

その他の表現

The doctor arrived in the nick of time.
(医師はギリギリ間に合って到着した。)

While Sam is sleeping, turn off the TV.
(サムが寝てるはテレビを消しなさい。)

POINT

・in the nick of time:(くだけて) 間一髪で、ギリギリのきわどい時に
・while:【名詞】(しばらくの) 間 /【接続詞】〜している間に
