英語の word の語源は「話す」で、皆さんもご存知のように「言葉」や「単語」を意味しますが、word は可算名詞ですので、単独で用いられることはありません。

a word と words は、動詞の have のあとでは意味合いが異なります。
have a word は比較的短い会話で、have words は口論したり話し合ったりするときに使います。

have a word は、主に意見を求めたり、ちょっとした頼み事をしたりするときに使われます。

have words は、深刻な問題について言い争ったり話し合ったりするときに用いられ、注意したり怒ったりしながら「話をする」というニュアンスです。
We had words again last night.

He had words with his friend and then struck him.
（彼は友人と口論になって彼を殴った。）
The server was rude, so I had words with the manager of the restaurant.
（給仕係が失礼だったので、レストランのマネージャーに文句を言った。）

・rude：失礼な、無礼な、無作法な
