「合う」に使える単語
同じ「合う」にも、「似合う」「釣り合う」「見合う」「合致する」など実に様々な表現がありますので、英語でどう言えば良いか迷ってしまうことがあるかと思いますが、まずは以下の単語の使い方をおさえておきましょう。
| go with | 食べ物・衣服などが調和する、合う |
| suit | 食べ物・気候などが人・物・事に適する、合う |
| fit | 大きさ・型などが合う |
| agree with | 食べ物・気候・風土などが「体質に合う」 ※ この意味の場合は通例 否定文・疑問文で用いられる |
| match | 食べ物の場合は、 make/are a good match のように名詞で使われるのが一般的 |
それぞれの例文を見ていきましょう。
食べ物が合う
Wine and cheese go well together.
（ワインとチーズはよく合う。）
This sauce goes well with steak.
（このソースはステーキによく合う。）
Red wine and beef are a good pairing.
（赤ワインと牛肉はよく合う。）
This white wine is a good match for the sautéed fish fillets.
（この白ワインは白身魚のソテーにぴったりだ。）
Hamburgers and French fries are the best combination that never gets old.
（ハンバーガーとフレンチフライは、決して廃れることのない最高の組み合わせだ。）
好み・体質に合う
I hope the wine will suit your taste.
（ワインがお口に合うと良いのですが。）
Alcohol / Meat doesn’t agree with me.
（アルコール / お肉は私の体質に合わない。）
I like buckwheat noodles, but they don’t like me.
（お蕎麦は好きなんだけど体に合わなくて。）
This dish is too salty for my taste.
（このお料理は塩味が強すぎて私の口には合わない。）
The coffee was not much to my liking/taste.
（そのコーヒーは私の口には合わなかった。）
衣服が合う
This red dress suits you well.
（この赤いドレスはよくお似合いですよ。）
The white hat goes well with your dress.
（その白い帽子はあなたのドレスによく合っていますよ。）
The necklace doesn’t go with your dress.
（そのネックレスは君のドレスには合わないよ。）
This is a nice blouse, but I wonder if it will fit me.
（このブラウス素敵だけと、私のサイズに合うかしら。）
This sweater is the wrong size for my little girl.
（このセーターはうちの娘にはサイズが合いません。）
This is not my size. Do you have this in a bigger size?
（私のサイズに合いません。これより上のサイズはありますか。）
性格・性質に合う
Country life suits me.
（田舎暮らしは私に合っている。）
It suits me to be busy all the time.
（いつも忙しいのが私には合っている。）
This job suits me.
I‘m well suited for this job.
This job fits me.
（この仕事は僕に向いている。）
The climate here doesn’t agree with me.
（ここの気候は私に合わない。）
・agree with は、この意味の場合は通例否定文・疑問文で用いられます。
合致する・付合する
This key doesn’t work.
This key won’t go in the lock.
This key doesn’t fit into this lock.
（この鍵は合わない。）
This clock is on time.
（この時計は時間通りだ。
Is your watch right/correct?
（君の時計は合ってる？）
Only thirteen out of one hundred questions were correct.
（100問中30問しか答えが合っていなかった。→「30問だけ合っていた」という意味）
What he said is true to the fact.
（彼が言ったことは事実と合っている。）
The DNA in the blood left at the crime scene matched his exactly.
（現場に残された血液のDNAは、彼のものと完全に一致した。）
This contract doesn’t meet your requirements.
（この契約はあなたの希望条件に合わない。→ この meet は「条件などを満たす」という意味）
・be on time：時間通りである
・be true to：〜に忠実である
目が合う
He didn’t look me in the eye.
（彼は目を合わせてくれなかった。）
When her eyes met mine, the woman came close to me.
（僕と目が合うと、その女性は近づいてきた。）
意見が合う
I agreed with him on this matter/point.
（彼とこのこと /点 で意見が合いました。）
His ideas are not in tune with the modern world.
（彼の思想は今の世の中には合わない。）
I withdrew from the group because of a difference of opinion.
（意見が合わないので、私はそのグループから抜けた。）
My father and I are on different wavelengths.
（父と私は波長が合わない。→「違う波長にいる」という意味）
・agree with：意見が合う、賛意を示す
・be in tune with：調和して、同調して
・because of：〜が原因で、〜の理由で
・withdraw：【自動詞】(活動・組織などから) 退く、身を引く ／【他動詞】❶(預金を) 引き出す ❷(活動・組織などから) 退かせる ❸(手足などを) 引っ込める ❹(援助・支持などを) 取りやめる ❺(競技などから) 出場を取り消す
・wavelength：(ラジオなどの) 周波数、(くだけて、性格などの) 波長
気が合う・相性がいい
We have good chemistry.
（私たちは気が合う。）
The actors in this movie had good chemistry.
（この映画に出演している俳優たちは相性が良かった。）
It is said that Aries and Leo are compatible star signs.
（牡羊座と獅子座は相性の良い星座だと言われている。）
I can’t get along well with him for some reason.
（なぜか彼とはウマが合わないんだ。）
He is easy to get along with.
He gets along with everybody.
（彼は付き合いやすい人だ。）
They’re a good fit/match for one another.
（あの2人、お似合いのカップルだね。）
・have good chemistry：相性がいい、ウマが合う
・be compatible：仲良くやっている、性格が合う
・get along with：人と仲良くする
