英語で「〜がある」と言いたいとき、日本語話者は there を好んで使う傾向にありますが、表現方法はこればかりではなく、また場合によっては there を使えないこともあります。
英語は「誰かが何かをする」というかたちを好む「動作主体の言語」とされているため、「動作主」を前面に出した表現をたくさん身につけることが重要です。

「ある」の表現いろいろ
日本語の「ある」は大きく分けて以下のような表現がありますが、英語では主題によって動作主または無生物を主語にした言い方がたくさんあります。
| 存在する | there is/are . . . ある「不特定のもの」が存在することを表し、 既出の情報の存在については使えない |
| 含む・付属する | have や contain などが一般的 |
| 扱っている | お店などで「〜はありますか」と尋ねるときは Do you have . . . ? が適切 |
| 持っている | 所有していることを意味する場合は have が一般的 |
| 位置する | be 動詞、be located、be situated、stand など |
| 起こる・発生する | happen、occur など |
| 行われる | there is/are . . . 、take place、be held など |
| 経験する | 現在完了を使って、Have you (ever) been . . . ? |
| 長さ・重さがある | be 動詞、measure など |
それぞれの例文を見ていきましょう。
存在する
there is/are は、不特定の名詞を主語にする場合やに用いられます。
There are some books on the desk.
（机の上に本が何冊かある。）
How many chairs are there in the room?
（部屋には椅子がいくつありますか。）
There are many small holes in the wall.
（壁には小さな穴がたくさん空いている。）
There is a wooden hanger rack attached to the wall.
（木製のハンガーが壁に備え付けられている。）
There was an accident at the intersection last night.
（昨夜交差点で事故があった。）
How many centimeters are there in an inch?
（1インチは何センチですか。）
関係詞節によって後ろから修飾される新情報の場合や、所有物であっても特定されないものであれば there is/are を使うことができます。
There is one thing that is certain.
（確かなことがひとつある。）
There is my pen in the second drawer if you need it.
（必要ならば私のペンが2番目の引き出しに入っていますよ。）
既出情報について「それ・その」という場合や、特定されるものに言及するときは、
there is/are は使わずに主語にします。
Mt. Takao is in Tokyo.
（高尾山は東京にある。）
The trunk is in my room.
（そのトランクは私の部屋にある。）
I found my ballpoint pen on the chair.
（ボールペンは椅子の上にあった。）
Various kinds of mushrooms are found on this mountain.
（この山には色々な種類のキノコがある。）
含む・付属する
This jacket has two pockets.
（このジャケットにはポケットが2つある。）
The house has three bedrooms.
（この家には寝室が3つある。）
This knife has many uses.
（このナイフには使い道がたくさんある。）
A week has seven days.
（一週間は7日ある。）
The document contains confidential information.
（文書の中に機密情報がある。→「含んでいる」という意味）
・contain：含む、(中に) 入れている、〜から成っている
・confidential：(情報が) 内密の、機密の
扱っている
お店で「〜はありますか」と尋ねるときは、Do you have . . . ? が一般的です。
Do you have decaffeinated coffee?
（カフェインレスコーヒーはありますか。）
Do you have this in stock?
（これの在庫はありますか。）
Do you have the same thing in any other colors?
（これと同じもので色違いはありますか。）
Do you carry gluten-free bread?
（グルテンフリーのパンはありますか。）
・stock：❶在庫品、貯蔵 ❷株、株式 ❸切り株、茎 ❹(肉・魚などの) 煮だし汁、スープのもと
・carry：(商品・品物の色・サイズなどを) 置いている、扱っている
持っている

（何か質問はありますか。）
Do you have something to write with?
（何か書くものはありますか。）
Everyone has (their own) worries.
（誰にでも悩みはある。）
The company has many experienced employees.
（その会社には経験豊富な従業員がたくさんいる。）
位置する
There stands a church on the hill.
（丘の上に教会がある。）
The old castle stands over the town.
（その古城は街を見下ろす場所にある。）
The box lies under the table.
（その箱は乗客席の下にある。→「置かれている」という意味）
Italy lies to the south of Switzerland.
（イタリアはスイスの南にある。）
Her town is situated on the Rhine at the German border.
（彼女の街はドイツ国境のライン川沿いにある。）
Hokkaido is located in the northern part of Japan.
（北海道は日本の北部にある。）
The parking spaces are located in front of the building.
（駐車スペースは建物の前にあります。）
The women’s restrooms are located on floors 2 and 3.
（女性用化粧室は2階と3階にあります。）
After crossing the bridge, you will see a white building on your right.
（橋を渡ると、右手に白い建物がありますよ。）
起こる・発生する
We have had many typhoons this year.
（今年は台風が多かった。）
An earthquake happened last night.
（昨夜地震があった。）
A bizarre murder case occurred in New York.
（ニューヨークで猟奇的殺人事件があった。）
・bizarre murder：猟奇殺人
・occur：(思わぬ出来事などが) 起こる、(考えなどが) 突然浮かぶ
行われる
The trade fair will be held next month.
（来月見本市がある。）
The Olympic Games take place at intervals of four years.
（オリンピックは4年ごとにある。）
Where did the accident take place?
（どこで事故があったんですか。）
There will be a dance party at the town hall next Saturday.
（来週の土曜日、公会堂でダンスパーティーがあります。）
・be held：(自身が関与する催事が) 開催される
・take place：(予め計画されていた、大規模なものや認知度の高いものが) 開催される、(事故などが) 起こる

（パリに行ったことはありますか。）

He is about six feet tall.
